Silly questions you get asked
Posted 6/9/2010 8:33:56 AM

Sometimes I wonder why I volunteer to help others in SL seeing some of the (often) silly questions. Most have the answer within the question so in effect the one asking the question has already answered it! And so many do.

An example (from the free script library:

Silvia Ametza: PSYS_SRC_BURST_RADIUS will not change fire start point, it will only influence fire particle "RADIUS"
Yvette Clavenham: possibly because its suffix is _RADIUS mebbe?
Silvia Ametza: ya
Yvette Clavenham: sorted, you answered your own question, WD

[5:30am PST - 8:00am PST] We will be performing some maintenance and upgrades to our network tomorrow morning starting at 5:30am PDT. The maintenance is expected to proceed for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. During that time you may experience an inability to login and/or you may be logged out.

Future Planned Maintenance
Server 1.38.4 Pilot Deploy
Wed 5 May 07:00 – 10:00 Pacific Time

Server 1.38.4 Full Deploy

Thu 6 May 07:00 – 12:00 Pacific Time

Too many server updates?
According to SL's WIKI, all server version updates are done in three stages. Yet this year its been done in two for each server version update!

According to LL, all possible server updates are thoroughly tested on a seperate newtwork of computers to make sure they work as intended PRIOR to being released! Hmmm, 1.38.0 suggests they deleted that seperate network.

The 'Pilot regions' is supposed to include the asset servers. Yet after each new server version update, something ALWAYS goes wrong with at least one database... Why? The new server version was supposedly tested etc...

If 1.38.0 was so good, why update to 1.38.1?
AND what happened to 1.38.2, 1.38.3 as in FIVE days they will upgrade to 1.38.4?

EVERYTIME LL release a new server version, within days they have to do 'server maintenace'. WHY?

Answers on a postcard to Linden Labs.

What To Do Update
Posted 2/25/2010 5:48:28 AM

This is what I got. Alienware Aurora (in the USA its called an Area 51).

It came with 3Gb system RAM and a 1Gb NVidia graphics car. The mobo will take upto 24Gb RAM but who would need that much RAM!

Why is the case so big? Because the CPU is liquid-cooled. Only fans in the computer are the PSU fan, GPU fan, & HD fan. Each component is in its own compartment so each ones fan cools it. Average ambient temperature is 24ºC compared to my old computers average ambient temperature of 57ºC+! The old computer has 6 fans; two in the PSU, large variable-speed fan for the CPU, GPU fan, system blower mounted below the GPU, intake fan to supply more cool air into the case.

To give an idea of the computers overall size, the monitor in the photo is a 23" widescreen and the computer is longer than the monitors width! Probably overkill for SL :)

The last time I upgraded my old PC then re-installed SL I got ye olde SL message that it didn't recognise the graphics card. Wonder if SL will recognise anything in the new computer? LOL

In a couple of months the old computer will have what will probably be its final upgrade; a 2nd internal SATA HD with Windows7 32-bit installed so it will become a dual-boot PC enabling me to boot to either Windows7 or XP Pro.

Misleading Adverts
Posted 2/25/2010 5:06:32 AM

Aren't some adverts misleading? This for example...

Why would anyone want to connect a radio to a computer and then need drivers for it to work under Micro$haft Windows XP?

1) If the wireless is a router made before XP was released then any drivers would already be in XP.

2) If the router was made after XP was released then it would come with any drivers it required and if you lost the routers drivers CD, you could easily download them from the router manufacturers website although most would work using XP's generic drivers.

3) If the wireless was already in the computer then any drivers would be in the computer else supplied with the computer. If it was a plugin adapter to enable you to connect wirelessly to a router then same thing, it would come with any drivers it needed.

What is it?
Posted 1/31/2010 7:04:24 AM

What is it?

Two saw how it looked yesterday.
It was described in brief detail to another.
Another knows it was going to be built but not how it would look or how big etc.

Start guessing. Someone might guess but I doubt it without clues.

What to do
Posted 12/22/2009 12:13:48 AM

When you want a new computer, is it better to buy the components and build your own or buy a brabded computer then the components to upgrade it to what you want?

Until about a year ago it was better and cheaper to buy the components to build your own. Now it seems its cheaper to buy a branded computer then buy the componants to upgrade it to what you want.

Whichever you do, what OS? XP has served me well for years but I think its time I bought a newer OS as this copy is XP Pro SP1. Why didn't I upgrade it to XP SP2 etc? Because SP2 came with a hidden extra that let Micro$haft decide what you could or couldn't do with your computer.

Vista (the replacement for XP) had its initial teething problems but once they were ironed out it ran well except for the frequent updates when you had to reboot. WGA / Micro$haft controlling what your computer does? Its your computer not Micro$hafts!

But thats now an old OS so maybe windows7? Windows7 seems to have a lot of new features but like when XP was realesed, they only work with other computers running under the same OS and not with those running under older or alternatice OS's.

English Language
Posted 11/21/2009 11:35:53 AM

They say the English Language is the hardest to learn because it has the largest vocabulary. IMO it is the hardest to learn because of the different ways a word in it can be used.

Take Disabled as an example. What does the word mean? How would it be used?

The law of averages states that if two or more give the same meaning then thats what it means. If all differ then its upto the individual / circumstances at the time which is appropriate.

Medically I have a recognised disablitiy but under British law I am not disabled. I have right-side Bells' Palsy which most days gives me almost constant facial pain for which there is no cure, no operation to stop the pain. It's wonderfull when the air temperature gets above 30ºC because then I get no pain. Anywhere between -24ºC and 30ºC and I get that pain.

What are the possible solutions to my predicament?
1) Move to a warmer climate.
2) Commit suicide.
3) Make the most of things in the hope that medical science will work out a solution.
4) ermmm

1) Can't afford to.
2) Been there, tried that.
3) Probably all I can do.
4) ermmm

Am I disabled? Do I have a disability?

I stay at home as much as I can because there I can control the air temperature around me and in doing so reduce the level of facial pain.

Crispins Fault
Posted 11/2/2009 9:06:42 AM

Why is it Crispins fault? Even more so after his saying, "But it's not my fault that it's my fault."

If its not his fault that any fault lies with him then how can it be his fault knowing its his fault even though its not his fault. And when did he own land with plate-tectonic forces creating those faults that aren't his?

Sorted Crispin, my five beats your two so quite obviously it's your fault.

If this were a tennis match it would still be your fault but as you fail to see how the fault is yours yet admit to it being your fault then surely it is your fault so if someone else leaves a comment to this before you that will be your fault again...
