Second Life Blogs What To Do Update Posted 2/25/2010 5:48:28 AM by Yvette Clavenham - [Show All My Posts]
This is what I got. Alienware Aurora (in the USA its called an Area 51).
It came with 3Gb system RAM and a 1Gb NVidia graphics car. The mobo will take upto 24Gb RAM but who would need that much RAM!
Why is the case so big? Because the CPU is liquid-cooled. Only fans in the computer are the PSU fan, GPU fan, & HD fan. Each component is in its own compartment so each ones fan cools it. Average ambient temperature is 24șC compared to my old computers average ambient temperature of 57șC+! The old computer has 6 fans; two in the PSU, large variable-speed fan for the CPU, GPU fan, system blower mounted below the GPU, intake fan to supply more cool air into the case.
To give an idea of the computers overall size, the monitor in the photo is a 23" widescreen and the computer is longer than the monitors width! Probably overkill for SL :)
The last time I upgraded my old PC then re-installed SL I got ye olde SL message that it didn't recognise the graphics card. Wonder if SL will recognise anything in the new computer? LOL
In a couple of months the old computer will have what will probably be its final upgrade; a 2nd internal SATA HD with Windows7 32-bit installed so it will become a dual-boot PC enabling me to boot to either Windows7 or XP Pro.
