About "
Geisha" (芸者)
Geisha in Edo dialect for male and female entertainers translates to "
accomplished person".
At first only males were "Geisha". Male Geisha were called "Taikomochi" or, more formally, "Houkan" after the first "Geiko" in Kyouto emerged. Those male Geisha never wore an Geisha's female attire by the way - no make up or extravagant Kimono, nor any elaborate hairstyles. The first female Geisha was reputedly the former "
Yuujo" (遊女 - prostitute)
Kasen, of the Okiya in Edo's Yoshiwara, who had paid off all her debts and began an entertainment business around
1761.
The word "Geisha" is unisex and simply describes an Artist. It comes from the two Japanese Kanji "gei" (芸) which stands for
art, and "sha" (者) meaning
person. Two other terms share the same meaning: "
Geigi" (芸妓 / 藝妓) and, in the Kamigata region (Oosaka and Kyouto), "
Geiko" (芸子).
A Geisha is a woman trained in a number of traditional skills such as Japanese
traditional dances,
singing,
calligraphy,
playing musical instruments,
floral design,
wearing Kimono,
performing tea ceremonies,
conversation,
etiquette and
manners.
The life of a Geisha is a continuous educational process. A real Geisha is a manifestation of
beauty,
elegance,
artistic talent,
sensuality,
impeccable etiquette and
refinement. One of the most valued Geisha flairs is her sensual allure. Through years of training and meditation, she has nurtured her sensuality and femininity. She knows the art of seduction and how to create a pleasant fantasy world for her guests.
Due to the westernisation of the Japanese culture there are only a few authentic Geisha left. Many Japanese entertainers prefered to call themselves Geisha. This fact contributed to misinterpretation and speculation about Geisha as a distinctive and exclusive profession.
Find out more about the cause of misinterpretation
here.
